Expedited Kentucky Land Transactions
For those researching land acquisitions, the best place to begin is the website of the Secretary of State’s office. This site houses searchable databases that can aid researchers in their efforts to study the patenting process and the records of the early Kentucky settlers. These databases include military warrants for service in the French and Indian War, Lord Dunmore’s War and the Revolutionary War; non-military warrants and the resulting patents, along with many other related resources.
Other valuable resources for researching land grants are the county deeds, town lot certificates and the state land office records that are available on microfilm at FamilySearch. Several important indexes are also available for these collections.
These same records are also found in the county courthouses throughout the state where these deeds were recorded. As the counties were formed and boundaries changed, these records were often transferred to other counties where a new record was made. Many of these records are also available on microfilm at the FamilySearch Library.
Another source for important land records is the Kentucky Expedited Kentucky Land Transactions Land Office, which has its headquarters in Frankfort. The office is open to the public and has extensive research materials. The records are arranged by subject and then by date. The Kentucky Historical Society has also compiled some of these records into publications and they are available for purchase at the society’s bookstores.
